Ecuador exported $5.6 billion more than it imported from America last year, mainly due to large shipments of oil, fish, cocoa beans as well as fruits and vegetables.
Despite a comparatively small population of 13.9 million, Ecuador grew its annual exports to America by 47.5% to US$9 billion in 2008, up 111.2% since 2004.
Ecuador’s imports from America rose 17.5% last year to $3.5 billion, a 106.8% increase from the 2004 amount.
Overall, the U.S. experienced a $5.6-billion deficit in its trade with Ecuador last year, mostly due to higher oil prices. Results from 2008 represent a 75% increase from America’s $3.2-billion trade deficit with Ecuador in 2007 and a 114.1% jump from the $2.6-billion deficit in 2004.
