Finland's Top Imports & Exports 2008Petroleum and Paper Products are Leading Finnish Exports to US
Nicknamed the Land of a Thousand Lakes, Finland imported nearly US$2 billion worth of automobiles and civilian aircraft from America in 2008.
Achieving a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) valued at US$274 billion, Finland was the world’s 33rd richest country in 2008. With a population of 5.3 million Finns who enjoyed an average GDP of $37,200 per person last year, Finland was also the 30th wealthiest nation in terms of GDP per capita. As the world’s 36th biggest exporter, Finland shipped $96.6 billion worth of exports in 2008. Principal Finnish exports were electrical and optical equipment, machinery, transport equipment, paper, chemicals, basic metals and timber. Based on 2008 statistics, Finland’s largest export clients were Russia (11.6%), Sweden (10%), Germany (10%), the United States (6.4%), the United Kingdom (5.5%) and Netherlands (5.1%). According to the CIA World Factbook, Finland imported $87.5 billion worth of foreign goods last year. Major commodities imported into Finland include foodstuffs, petroleum, chemicals, transport equipment, iron and steel, textile fabrics and grains. Leading suppliers to Finland were Russia (16.3%), Germany (15.7%), Sweden (13.6%), Netherlands (6.3%), China (5.1%) and the United Kingdom (4.2%). In total, Finland’s international trade amounted to $184.1 billion or 67.2% in relation to its overall GDP. This compares with roughly 25% for the U.S. and 60% for Canada. Finnish Trade with the U.S.Last year, Finnish exports to America rose 12.1% to $5.9 billion. Over that same period, Finland bought $3.8 billion worth of U.S. imports – an increase of 20%.
